Reno - Grand Sierra
February 13, 2011 I'm sitting in the Reno Airport after having one of the most stimulating Rat Pack experiences to date. i was in town for a concert last night at The Grand Sierra Hotel and Casino performing on one of the Worlds largest stages. Unbelievably huge. Huge. The night was very special to me and will continue to be one that I will hold in high regard forever.
As some of you may know, Sammy performed in Reno for many years. The Grand Sierra happened to be one of the stages where he shared his talents. It was so wonderful to perform in a space that still holds not only his energy but also his car. It sits backstage next to Frank Sinatra's. Apparently Frank took over the showroom in 1989/1990 after the main stage production show closed. The energy in the room is palpable. The 1500 seat house was nearly sold out last night and It was a remarkable evening.
It is always so nice to get a positive response from people who loved Sammy, Frank and Dean. Some of the players in the Reno Philharmonic actually played for Sammy when he was at Harrah's in Reno and it was a pleasure to meet them. The stories that they have about Sammy speak so high about his generosity and flat out brilliance. One woman who played for him told me that she always felt like she should be paying him because his performances were so dynamic and inspiring.
I leave Reno with a deeper understanding of myself and Sammy Davis, Jr. I continue to be amazed by how much he accomplished and experienced. I am truly fortunate to have at least a small tate of some of those experiences. i mean really....singing Once In A Lifetime center stage at the Grand Sierra with a full Philharmonic Orchestra behind me? It ain't so bad!!!!!
