You think we don't know but we do

Updated: Jan 9, 2021

This...

I had a hard time writing this. Really hard time. A moment of deep truth.

Are you "you"? Are you "we"?

You think we don’t know but we do

You think we don’t know that you are conditioned to believe you’re superior to black people

We know. It’s in your DNA

You think we don’t know that you are fearful of unleashed, unsuppressed, free Black people

We know. It’s in your DNA

You think we don’t know that Black people are the root of your existence in America

Without us you wouldn't have and won't survive

We know. It’s in your DNA

We are you

We are your money which is everything to you

We made you wealthy

We are the foundation of your riches

You purchased us just as you purchased your land and used us as equity

We surveyed your land

We plowed your fields

We planted your crops

We picked your cotton

We prepared your food

We nourished your souls

We fed your children

We sexually satiated your spouses

We bore your children

You don’t think we know but we do

You don’t think we know that you need us to entertain you

We do. It’s in your DNA

You don’t think we know that we provide the barometer for what is culturally popular.

You don’t think we know that we make you feel comfortable

Everything we do has been designed to make you feel comfortable

You designed it that way and we know that

We built your houses

We made your furniture

We trained your horses and raised your children

We designed your homes

We built your kitchens

We served your meals

We managed and tolerated your intoxication

We cared for your souls

You think we don’t know Black people fighting Black people makes it easier for you

Easier for you to place blame

Easier for you to talk about us behind our backs

You think we don’t know but we do

You think we don’t know about your compartmentalized feelings in regards to class

We know where your definition of class puts us

It’s in your DNA

You think we don’t know what you know

You think we don’t know that you have to have the last word, make the final decision and hold the power of choice to make change

We know. It’s in your DNA

You stunted and stole our education

You chose what we should know and how we should know it

You think we don't know that you created rules and laws to ensure we won’t know what you know

We know. It’s in your DNA

You can’t run from it

If you try to it will catch up to you just like the blackness of my skin

I can’t run away from it

If I ever wanted to you wouldn't let me

I love and I am proud of my blackness

I choose to learn about my history and not carry guilt from my past

You think we don’t know you’re running away from your past

We do. It’s in your DNA

You think we don’t know that given the facts you will do everything you can to deny them

You try hard to run away from the history of your people but you can’t

It’s in your DNA

I’m in your DNA

We are a part of you

We are America

We all really know

You just think we don’t but we do
